Abstract

Chloroform, methanol, ethanol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and aqueous extract of dried leaves of Bauhinia tomentosa was prepared separately and evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger by cup-plate method. Methanol extract (100 μg) of Bauhinia tomentosa has shown significant activity against the tested microorganisms in comparison with the standard doxycycline and ketoconazole. Each 100 mg of chloroform and ethanol extract of Bauhinia tomentosaalso showed antimicrobial activity against tested organisms whereas no other extracts show such activity.
