A series of beta-D-glycopyranosyl xanthotoxol derivatives has been synthesised and screened for CNS depressant activity. The more active CNS depressant,9-beta-D-arabinopyranosyl xanthotoxol (IX), was selected for detailed study on different pharmacological parameters. It caused dose dependent inhibition of spontaneous motor activity, prolongation of hexabarbitone, pentobarbitone and ether hypnosis.
