A rapid method for the determination of microgram quantities of pentazocine and mefenamic acid in dosage forms has been proposed, based on their ability to form a water-soluble coloured complex with sodium nitroprusside and hydroxyl-ammonium chloride. The intensities of the coloured species were measured at 750 nm and 620 nm respectively.
