A mathematical relatioship for the interaction between preservatives and pharmaceutical adjuvants has been developed. A linear relationship between the parameter R, i.e. the ratio of total to free preservative concentration and the adjuvant concentration X has been observed. IT is suggested that the R value could be used in calculating the amount of preservative to be used in pharmaceutical formulation.
