The effect of some polyhydric alcohols and PVP, pH of the desorbing solution and viscosity of the emulsion on the release characteristics of salbutamol sulphate from a W/O/W multiple emulsion system was studied. The drug release profiles exhibited two phases, an initial fast phase, followed by a second, slower phase. The polyhydric alchols were found to increase drug diffusion with increasing concentration of additive while PVP had only a marginally higher effect. Drug release was dependent on the pH of the desorbing solution. The viscosity of the outer aqueous phase has a marginal effect on drug diffusion.
