A senstive and selective method for the rapid determination of meperidine is described based on its reaction with hydroxylamine in alkaline medium to give corresponding hydroxamic acid which forms a violet coloured complex with iron (III) in acidic medium having lambda max 510 nm. Beer's law is obeyed 5-45 mug/ml of meperidine.
