An evergreen shrub (kernels commonly known as MACASSAR KERNELS), B.javanica (Linn.) Merr. syn.B.sumatrana Roxb.;B.sumatrensis Spreng;B.gracilis DC;B.glabra Decene; and B.amarissima (Lour) Desv. is widely distributed from Sri Lanka through S.E.Asia to S.China and Taiwan,throughout Malaysia to N.Australia. In India, it is distributed in N.Bengal,Assam,Kerala and in the Andaman Islands. The plant belongs to the Simaroubaceae family and attains the height of ca 1.8 m, and bears purplish-black,fleshy bitter fruits having a solitary seed.
