Inhibitory concentrations of nonyl (ADB-9) and tetradecyl-(ADB-14) dimethylbenzylammonium compounds produced growth curves which were qualitatively similar. Larger concentrations of the short chain compound were required to achieve degrees of inhibitions similar to ADB-14. Concentrations of the agents which stopped growth also rapidly inhibited respirations in the cell. Both ADB-9 and ADB-14 possess bactericidal properties against the organism in medium containing glucose. The activity of ADB-14 was reduced and that of ADB-9 was abolished in the absence of glucose in the medium. The activity of ADB-14 was 8-12 times that of ADB-9.
