Cellulase from Aspergillus niger was used to hydrolyse carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) present in the fortified procaine pencillin formulation. The filtration time during the sterlity test was reduced from 300 min to 4 min. The approach can be extended to sterility testing of other pharmaceutical preparations containing CMC as an ingredient.
